Rattlesnake Vaccine
Well it's not exactly new any more, in fact , we've been very impressed with this vaccine! After approximately 3 years of use at GVAH, we have seen that this vaccine really seems to dramatically reduce the reaction to a rattlesnake bite. Additionally, though not approved for cats, it is being used off label in cats, with great results (our own cats are currently vaccinated with it - especially after 1 cat has brought home 2 rattlesnakes...)
Red Rock Biologics has produced a vaccine that can reduce or eliminate the need for costly antivenin after a rattlesnake bite. Currently, with the cost of antivenin running about $400-$600 per vial, treatment can easily reach or exceed $1,000, depending on how many vials of antivenin your pet may require.
The cost of the vaccine is $27.50 per dose. Initially, your dog will require 2 doses 1 month apart, followed by an annual booster. Certain dogs may benefit from additional dosages, these dogs include;
Toy Breeds, Giant Breeds, or dogs at high risk (hunting dogs)
A booster vaccine is recommended in the spring, prior to 'rattlesnake season'.
No significant adverse side effects have been reported following vaccination.
If your pet has been bitten, it is recommended to wait 6 weeks to vaccinate.
We currently have the vaccine available.
NOTE:
A rattlesnake bite should always be treated as an emergency, with or without vaccination, and treatment sought as soon as possible. We do have antivenin at our hospital, but after hours, please seek care immediately at an Emergency hospital close to you. We Recommend
